Arniston’s Kassiesbaai is the only fishing community in South Africa which still lives off the ocean in the traditional way, and the entire village is a National Monument.
With its thatch roofs, whitewashed walls and ramshackle streets and alleys, Kassiesbaai is a wonderful place to explore on foot. Just make sure you charge your camera beforehand! And make time to speak to the locals: they’re always up for a chat, especially if it’s too windy for the boats to go out. These days there are a few restaurants (I recommend Willeen’s) serving up seafood and local fare like bobotie and ‘art galleries’ which sell some of the local crafts and help to support the women in the community. ”
