Nelson Mandela was arrested on 5 August 1962 outside Howick, Natal, South Africa. He spent the next 27 years of his life in prison. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site commemorates this moment in history with a visitor centre and a world-renowned sculpture.
The Visitor Centre is complemented by the ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ which guests are encouraged to experience by following the timeline of Mandela’s life through a landscaped garden. The ‘Long Walk’ culminates at the iconic sculpture, entitled Release. The sculpture features 50 steel columns which dramatically come into focus as Mandela’s face from a particular vantage point.
Also on site is a coffee shop open for breakfast and light lunches and a gift shop offering exclusive merchandise. The Coffee Shop provides a range of meals such as burgers and toasted sandwiches and a variety of hot and cold drinks, including cappuccinos.
The Site caters for both guided and non-guided tours, school groups, conferences and can develop a bespoke package to suit your requirements.
